It is on Thursday April 26, starting at 7am. Shoes required - no flip flops/sandals. Wrenches and gloves welcomed!
No experience is required, although basic experience with stage or tech set-up preferred.
You don't need to come right at 7am, any and all help is welcomed.

EMA added to Culture Shock!

As you probably know, we had a last minute cancellation with Grimes for this year's Culture Shock. As unfortunate as this is, we have no choice but to move on with the festival, and we are proud to announce that her replacement on the lineup will be EMA!

EMA is the current project of Erika M. Anderson, formerly of the band Gowns. She released her debut LP as EMA, 'Past Life Martyred Saints,' last year on Souterrain Transmissions. The album draws equally from folk and noise rock, and is fronted by overtly honest lyrics that deal with abuse, sexuality, and death, among other topics. EMA's live show varies from start to finish, and at any given moment it can recall the intimacy of a folk singer, the raw energy of Nirvana, the stage antics of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, or some combination of the three.

CULTURE SHOCK 2012 LINEUP:

THE CULTURE SHOCK 2012 (AKA APOCALYPSE SHOCK) LINEUP IS HERE! IT'S WRITTEN BELOW IN A SORT-OF DESCENDING ORDER WITH SOME DESCRIPTIONS OF ALL THE ACTS IN CASE YOU'RE UNFAMILIAR AND WOULD LIKE TO LEARN MORE. THOSE DESCRIPTIONS ARE FOLLOWED WITH DOWNLOADS AND/OR STREAMS OF ONE SONG BY EACH ACT. ENJOY!!

The after party on Friday will be a live performance in the stood by New Orleans bounce artist Big Freedia. If you're unfamiliar with bounce music, it's big on call and response vocals, high energy beats, and a whole lot of ass shaking. Big Freedia has been considered one of the "sissy bounce" like Katey Red and Sissy Nobby, who all identify as queer, though Freedia disregards the categorization, saying there's no reason to separate straight bounce and sissy bounce. If you've seen Big Freedia then you know what you're in for. Otherwise, this video should clear things up. Recommended if you like: to dance

Saturday's headliner is Idle Warship. a collective fronted by the duo of hip hop emcee Talib Kweli (also of Black Star with Mos Def and Reflection Eternal with Hi-Tek) and R&B/soul singer Res, who has collaborated with Talib on all of his solo releases. The group released their debut full length album, Habits of the Heart, late last year, and it blended all of the genres that both Talib and Res have become known for creating. Live, they'll be bringing a full band and we can even count on them playing some Talib Kweli classics, like "Get By". Recommended if you like: Mos Def, Janelle Monae, Common, Erykah Badu, The Roots

Friday's headliner, Islands, were formed in 2005 by frontman Nicholas Thorburn (aka Nick Diamonds) after the breakup of his former band, The Unicorns. They hail from Montreal and make the kind of indie rock/pop that we've seen from their fellow Canadians like Wolf Parade and The New Pornographers. They've got four albums under their belt, having most recently released A Sleep & A Forgetting earlier this year. Experimental pop singer Grimes (aka Claire Boucher) released the excellent album, Visions, earlier this year on 4AD, who has also put out records by St. Vincent and tUnE-yArDs. Like those two artists, Grimes makes incredibly forward thinking pop music and since the album's release date, she's only been getting bigger and bigger. Regardless of your taste in music, most can agree that Visions is already one of the most standout albums of 2012. RIYL: tUnE-yArDs, St. Vincent, Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance

IDM producer Tycho (aka Scott Hansen) has been one of the leading names in electronica during the last decade though not much had been heard from him towards the end. His most recent album, Dive, came out in late 2011 and since then he's been the talk of the dance music scene. RIYL: Four Tet, Caribou, Boards of Canada

The Felice Brothers have been making country leaning folk rock for the better part of a decade with eight full length albums under their belt. They've left a huge mark on the folk scene having played folk festivals like Newport Folk Festival and Clearwater Festival, in addition to others outside of their immediate realm like Bonnaroo. Casey Veggies is a young rapper from LA who has collaborated with Dom Kennedy, Pac Div, Odd Future, and others. He released his debut LP, 'Sleeping in Class,' in December 2010 and has spent the last year touring. He released the deluxe edition of 'Sleeping in Class,' which includes 5 bonus tracks, this past September. RIYL: The Cool Kids, Dom Kennedy, Pac Div, Kendrick Lamar

Cloud Nothings began in 2009 as an outlet for frontman Dylan Baldi to create home-recorded noise pop in the vein of contemporaries like Wavves. This past January, they released their second official full length, Attack on Memory, and took things in a much bolder direction. The record was recorded full band in studio and produced by the legendary Steve Albini, who has lent a similar style of production work to Nirvana, Pixies, and PJ Harvey. The new album sees the band channeling the guitar-driven alt-rock of those bands and especially of Sunny Day Real Estate. As a result, Attack on Memory is one of the best no-frills rock records of 2012 and Cloud Nothings are sure to bring this newfound energy to Culture Shock this year. Pissed Jeans, along with bands like The Men, Ceremony, and Fucked Up, are bringing back the sound and spirit of 80s hardcore punk. Since 2007, they've been recording for Sub Pop, whose eclectic roster has given us everyone from NIrvana to The Shins to Fleet Foxes, so if Sub Pop trusts a punk band in an age where punk is dead, so should we. Their live show comes stacked with outlandish stage antics and tons of moshing from the crowd. Should be nuts. RIYL: The Men, Ceremony, Fucked Up, The Stooges, The Jesus Lizard

Bio Ritmo is a salsa band from Richmond, VA who celebrated their twentieth anniversary last year with the album La Verdad. They've toured with everyone from salsa king Tito Puente to alt-country rockers Wilco, and based on live videos, they look like a ton of fun to see and dance to. Grimes (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Grimes/133232266718746) is the recording moniker of Claire Boucher, an experimental pop musician from Montreal. She released two albums in 2010, 'Geidi Primes' and 'Halifaxa,' and followed that last year with 'Darkbloom,' a split with d'Eon which lent the standout Grimes track, "Vanessa." Now, after having recently announced her signing with 4AD (Pixies, The National, St. Vincent), she'll release her first album for the label, 'Visions,' which is due out on February 21. This past week, the first meeting for Culture Shock took place with the Major Events Committee. The MECs expressed their interest in passing by all of the clubs to see just who the people want for CS. Being on the committee as well as president of HHC, I figured their first stop should be us. So, for this particular meeting, we're gonna talk artists... why we can't get certain people (like Lil' B).... and list down potential contenders for CS.

SO FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO ALWAYS COMPLAIN ABOUT THE LINE-UP, YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY HERE TO SPEAK YOUR MIND AND SUGGEST SOMEONE THAT YOU WOULD ACTUALLY LIKE TO COME HERE FOR CULTURE SHOCK (ESPECIALLY to those people in charge).

FALL FEST 2011 AKA MISCHIEF NIGHT LINEUP

THE FALL FEST 2011 AKA MISCHIEF NIGHT LINEUP HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED! WE'VE GOT A NUMBER OF UP AND COMING BANDS SPANNING GENRES ACROSS THE WORLD WITH EVERYTHING FROM SOUTHERN HIP HOP TO NORWEGIAN METAL TO AFRICAN BUBU MUSIC. CHECK THE BANDS OUT WITH A FREE MIXTAPE DOWNLOADABLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST!

Utica indie rockers Bad Sound, featuring Purchase's Jake Sachs on drums, will kick off Fall Fest 2011. They recently released a three track EP which you can download below.

Recent Purchase alumni Big Muff (aka Nick Noto) creates nostalgic pop songs drenched in reverb, distortion, and pitch-shifted vocals.

Brooklyn's Friends will start things off early with their fresh brand of female-fronted sugary indie pop at Fall Fest. Come out early and catch their set. Recommended if you like: Warpaint, Glasser, Best Coast

Equal parts singer/songwriter and electro-producer, Denver's R E A L M A G I C (aka Drew Englander) combines grime synths with soaring Beirut-esque vocal harmonies. If you aren't familiar with R E A L M A G I C yet, don't miss your chance to check him out early on. RIYL: Neon Indian, James Blake, M83

If the summery sounds of the two previous acts aren't your thing, stick around for sludge metal trio Zoroaster to take the stage. These guys bring blunted riffs and gruff vocals not unlike Mastodon, whose guitarist Brent Hinds is featured on the song you can download below. RIYL: Mastodon, Weedeater, Kyuss

Mariachi tinged indie folkies The David Wax Museum, who recently played Newport Folk Festival, will bring their eclectic mix of sounds to Fall Fest this year. Don't expect slow country songs from these guys though, they've got a rhythm section that begs for a Mexo-American dance party. RIYL: Beirut, Okkervil River, Deer Tick

In 2008, Jessica Lea Mayfield released With Blasphemy So Heartfelt, her first full length under her own name. The album, produced by The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach (whose 2008 LP, Attack and Release, Jessica provided vocals on), is a melancholic folk masterpiece bringing together country-stained psychedelia and the desolate moods of a Nick Drake or Elliot Smith album. She followed that up this year with the slightly brighter Tell Me, released on Nonesuch, home to Wilco, David Byrne, and The Magnetic Fields. The album's lead single, "Our Hearts Are Wrong," is available for download below. Jessica will be performing solo at this year's Fall Fest. RIYL: Cat Power, Gillian Welch, Jenny Owen Youngs

If you're looking to mosh at Fall Fest, don't miss the triple guitar attack of Norwegian six-piece Kvelertak. Combining the dark moods of black metal and the pure fury of classic rock & roll, Kvelertak deliver punch after punch and refuse to slow down. They released their self titled debut, produced by Converge's Kurt Ballou, last year. You can download the track "Mjod" below, and though it's not downloadable, it just wouldn't feel right not to point you in the direction of album standout "Blodtorst". Alabama hip hop duo G-Side started making a buzz for themselves earlier this year when they released The ONE...COHESIVE. Since the album's release, it has made Spin's Top Albums of 2011 So Far and helped land them a spot at Pitchfork Music Festival, where they left quite an impression. And G-Side aren't stopping there. Before 2011 finishes up, they'll have dropped another full length, Island, which includes "Gettin It," featuring guest vocals by Stalley and Joi Tiffany, and a Tame Impala sample. That song can be downloaded below. Their songs are full of woozy synths, hard snares, and a biting flow with the attack of dirty club rap and the more poetic sensibilities of the underground. Brooklyn-via-Rhode Island rockers Fang Island combine the math rock meets indie pop elements of their Sargent House labelmates Tera Melos and Maps & Atlases with the punkish energy and classic riffing of their New Jersey neighbors Titus Andronicus. Fang Island will bring the party. All they ask is that you're there to celebrate it with them. RIYL: Tera Melos, Maps & Atlases, Titus Andronicus

Fall Fest 2011 will be wrapped up by Janka Nabay. Originally from Sierra Leone, Janka made a name for himself as a Bubu musician, and became the first artist to record Bubu music, a traditional genre of the Temne people in Sierra Leone. He relocated to Philadelphia in the 90s and last year he formed Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang with members of Gang Gang Dance, Skeletons, Zs, and Starring, and released the first ever international Bubu album on True Panther Sounds (Girls, Trash Talk).
